Video Post
A native video uploaded directly to LinkedIn, which auto-plays muted in the feed and supports captions, chapters, and analytics.
A video post on LinkedIn is a native video file uploaded directly to the platform, as opposed to a YouTube or Vimeo link. Native videos auto-play (muted, with captions) as users scroll the feed, which gives them a strong attention advantage over linked video, which requires a click and a page change.
LinkedIn supports videos up to 10 minutes long and 5 GB in size, in landscape, square, or portrait aspect ratios. Portrait (9:16) takes the most vertical feed space on mobile and tends to perform best for short-form content. Square (1:1) is the safe default for longer talking-head clips.
Captions are essential because most feed viewers watch with sound off. LinkedIn auto-generates captions, but editing them by hand removes the typos that hurt credibility. Adding burned-in captions (open captions) is even better for retention because they survive any platform or download.
The algorithm treats video watch time the same way it treats dwell time for text posts: longer watch equals more reach. A 60-second video where viewers stay through the end outperforms a 4-minute video they abandon at 30 seconds. Front-loading the hook in the first three seconds is non-negotiable.
LinkedIn also rolled out a vertical short-form video feed in 2024, similar to TikTok's For You page. Posting in 9:16 with on-screen text gives the same asset shots in both the main feed and the vertical feed.
