Glossary
Plain-language definitions for the terms you will hit while building a LinkedIn or X presence. From algorithm signals to format conventions, this is what those words actually mean.
Blue Checkmark
The verification badge displayed next to a profile name. On X, formerly free for notable accounts; since 2022, available to any X Premium subscriber.
Broetry
A LinkedIn post style where almost every sentence is its own paragraph, creating a tall, skinny visual shape that maximizes white space and dwell time.
Community Notes
X's crowdsourced fact-checking system that lets approved contributors add context to misleading posts. Notes appear publicly under posts when a diverse range of contributors rates them as helpful.
Company Page
A LinkedIn business profile representing an organization rather than an individual. Posts from company pages typically get less organic reach than personal profiles.
Content Calendar
A scheduled plan of what content will be published, when, and on which channels. Ranges from a simple spreadsheet to dedicated scheduling tools.
Content Pillars
The three to five recurring themes or topics that your content centers on. Pillars provide structure to a content strategy and prevent random posting.
Distribution
The set of channels and tactics that get content in front of readers, as distinct from creating the content itself. Often the underrated half of content strategy.
Document Post
A LinkedIn post type created by uploading a PDF, Word, or PowerPoint file. The platform renders it as a swipeable deck in the feed.
Dwell Time
How long a reader stops on your post before scrolling past, measured in seconds. LinkedIn uses it as a primary ranking signal in the feed algorithm.
Employee Advocacy
A program where employees share company-related content from their personal social accounts, amplifying brand reach through trusted individual voices.
Engagement Pod
A coordinated group of users who agree to like, comment on, and share each other's content shortly after publishing to artificially boost algorithmic reach. Controversial and often penalized by platforms.
Engagement Rate
A ratio that measures how much interaction a post earned relative to how many people saw it. Usually calculated as (likes + comments + shares + saves) / impressions.
Evergreen Content
Content that retains relevance and pulls traffic or engagement for months or years after publishing, as opposed to news-driven or time-sensitive content.
Ghostwriting
Writing content that gets published under someone else's name. Common in books, op-eds, and increasingly in LinkedIn and X content for executives and founders.
Hook
The opening one to three lines of a post that determine whether a reader clicks "see more" or scrolls past. On LinkedIn, only the first ~210 characters show before the truncation.
Impressions
The number of times a post was displayed on someone's screen, regardless of whether they engaged with it. The most basic reach metric on every major social platform.
InMail
LinkedIn's paid direct messaging feature that lets you message people you're not connected with, available on Premium, Sales Navigator, and Recruiter plans.
LinkedIn Carousel
A multi-slide post created by uploading a PDF, which LinkedIn renders as a horizontally swipeable deck in the feed. Technically a document post.
LinkedIn Newsletter
A long-form publishing feature on LinkedIn that lets creators publish recurring articles, and that auto-notifies subscribers by email and in-app notification each time a new issue ships.
LinkedIn Pulse
The original name for LinkedIn's long-form article publishing platform, launched in 2014. Now simply called LinkedIn Articles.
Mute vs Block
Two distinct moderation actions on X. Muting hides an account's content from your feed without notifying them; blocking prevents them from interacting with your account at all.
Notes App Screenshot
A long-form piece of text screenshotted from the iPhone Notes app (or similar) and posted as an image, used to bypass X's character limit with a recognizable aesthetic.
Open Profile
A LinkedIn Premium setting that lets any LinkedIn member send you a free InMail, even if they're not connected and don't have Premium themselves.
Personal Brand
The public reputation an individual builds through their writing, content, work, and presence. Distinct from a company brand because it belongs to a person, not an entity.
Premium Career
LinkedIn's entry-level paid subscription, aimed at job seekers. Includes InMail credits, applicant insights, and who-viewed-your-profile data.
Quote Tweet
A tweet that embeds another tweet and adds your own commentary above it. Functions like a retweet with context.
Recruiter Lite
LinkedIn's entry-level recruiting product, sitting between Premium and full Recruiter. Designed for individuals or small teams making a handful of hires per year.
Reply Guy
Pejorative for an X user who reliably replies to (usually large) accounts within minutes of every post, typically with low-substance comments aimed at pulling visibility.
Repurposing
Taking one piece of content and reformatting it into multiple posts, formats, or channels — e.g. turning a podcast episode into clips, quote graphics, threads, and a blog post.
Sales Navigator
LinkedIn's premium product tier for B2B sales professionals, offering advanced lead search, account tracking, alerts, and CRM integrations.
SSI (Social Selling Index)
LinkedIn's proprietary 0-100 score that measures how well you build a professional brand, find the right people, engage with insights, and build relationships on the platform.
Swipe File
A personal collection of saved posts, ads, emails, hooks, or other copy that you reference for inspiration when creating your own content.
Thought Leadership
Content that positions an individual or company as an authority on a topic by sharing original analysis, opinions, or frameworks rather than recycling common knowledge.
Thread
A series of connected tweets posted by the same author as a sequence, used to share long-form ideas that exceed X's character limit.
Tone of Voice
The consistent style of communication a brand or individual uses across all written and verbal content. Often documented in a brand voice guide.
Video Post
A native video uploaded directly to LinkedIn, which auto-plays muted in the feed and supports captions, chapters, and analytics.
Voice Training
The process of teaching an AI writing tool your personal style by feeding it samples of your past content, so its drafts sound like you rather than generic AI output.
X List
A curated feed of accounts on X, viewable as a chronological stream separate from the main timeline. Useful for tracking specific topics or communities without follower noise.
X Premium
X's paid subscription tier (formerly Twitter Blue) that bundles the blue checkmark, longer posts, edit tweet, algorithmic boost, and an ad revenue share for eligible accounts.
X Spaces
Live audio rooms on X (formerly Twitter Spaces). Anyone can host or join a Space, with speaker requests, recording, and replay support.
