X Spaces

Live audio rooms on X (formerly Twitter Spaces). Anyone can host or join a Space, with speaker requests, recording, and replay support.

X Spaces is the live audio feature on X, launched in 2021 as Twitter Spaces during the Clubhouse moment and kept after the platform rebrand. A Space is a real-time audio room where a host (and co-hosts) talk while listeners join in to listen or request to speak.

To start a Space, tap the composer and select Spaces. You set a title, optionally schedule a time, and go live. Listeners get notifications based on followship of the host. Speakers are gated: listeners request the mic and the host accepts or declines. Spaces can be recorded and replayed indefinitely.

Spaces have found a stable role on the platform after the early hype faded. Common use cases: tech industry post-news debriefs ("OpenAI just dropped this, let's react live"), AMAs with founders or politicians, niche-community shows that run on a regular cadence, and live commentary during events like product launches or sporting matches.

Unlike a podcast, the value of a Space is partly the live energy. Listeners can join, leave, ask to speak, react, and tweet about the conversation while it's happening. Recorded Spaces play back but lose most of that energy, which is why live audience size usually beats replay numbers significantly.

For creators, Spaces are a fast way to deepen relationships with a community. Even a Space with 50 live listeners produces more genuine connection than thousands of impressions on a tweet. The format rewards consistency: shows that air weekly at a fixed time build standing audiences faster than ad-hoc Spaces.

Monetization options include Ticketed Spaces (paid entry) and the standard Premium revenue share for impressions on the Space's host tweet.
