Buffer's 2M-post study says post more. Everyone else says 2-5x a week. Here's why both are right, and how to find your own ceiling.

One says 2 to 5 times a week, and warns that posting more cannibalises your own reach. The other — backed by the largest public dataset on the question — says impressions per post keep climbing right up to 11+ posts a week, with no visible ceiling.
Both are on page one. Both sound authoritative. They can't both be describing the same thing.
Here's what the data actually shows, where it stops being able to help you, and how to find the number that applies to your account rather than to an average.
The short answer
3 to 5 posts a week, if you want one number and you're building a personal brand around a business.
That's not because five is a magic figure. It's because 3 to 5 is the range most solo operators can sustain for a year without either burning out or shipping filler — and duration is what compounds on LinkedIn, not weekly volume.
If you have a content team, or a large back catalogue of ideas, the honest answer is that the data doesn't show an upper limit where more posting starts hurting you. It shows something more subtle.
What Buffer's 2-million-post study found
The most useful public dataset on LinkedIn cadence comes from Buffer's analysis of over 2 million LinkedIn posts across more than 94,000 accounts.
Compared with posting once a week:

At 11+ posts a week, Buffer also recorded roughly 3× more total engagements.
Read the middle column again, because it's the counterintuitive part. This isn't saying "post more and get more total reach," which would be trivially true. It's saying each individual post gets more impressions when you're posting more often. That directly contradicts the reach-cannibalisation warning you'll find in most other articles.
Buffer's method also deserves credit. Rather than comparing high-frequency accounts against low-frequency accounts — which would confuse posting habits with account size — they compared high- and low-frequency weeks within the same accounts, using z-score analysis and fixed-effects regression to control for account-level differences.
That design rules out the obvious objection. Big accounts posting a lot aren't dragging the average up.
Where the study stops being able to help you
The within-account design handles differences between accounts. It can't handle differences within an account over time.
Think about what an 11-post week looks like in your own calendar. It's a week you shipped a feature, or came back from a conference with six ideas, or had a launch, or simply felt energised and had a lot to say. Those weeks produce more posts and better posts, from the same underlying cause.
A quiet week produces two mediocre posts because you had nothing much to talk about — not because two is an unlucky number.
So the correlation is real and well-measured. What it can't establish is the thing you actually want to know: if you forced yourself to post 11 times next week, would each post get 16,946 more impressions? Almost certainly not, because the forcing doesn't come with the material and the energy that made those weeks productive in the first place.
This is the gap between an observed pattern and an intervention. Buffer measured the pattern accurately. The intervention is a different question, and nobody has run that experiment at scale.
The practical reading: high-output weeks are a symptom of having something to say. Manufacturing the symptom without the cause gets you volume without the results.
The "posting more hurts reach" claim
The competing claim across most of page one is that posting more than once a day cuts your reach — one widely circulated figure puts the drop at 40% when publishing 2+ times daily.
I went looking for the dataset behind that number and couldn't find one. The sources repeating it attribute it to unpublished internal analysis, with no methodology, sample size, or independent replication. The same is true of the frequently quoted "60 to 90 minute visibility window" that supposedly makes back-to-back posts compete with each other.
That doesn't make the claims false. It makes them unverified, and worth holding loosely — especially when the largest public dataset on the question points the other way.
What's defensible: LinkedIn's feed is ranked, not chronological, so two posts published an hour apart are competing for the same slots in the same people's feeds. Whether that produces a 40% penalty or a rounding error, no one has published evidence either way. The real constraint is capacity
Strip out the algorithm speculation and the question becomes much simpler.
Your posting frequency is capped by how many things you can say that are worth reading. For most founders that's somewhere between two and five a week, and the limit isn't the algorithm — it's the supply of ideas, evidence, and stories you actually have.
This is why "quality over quantity" is technically right but useless as advice. Nobody chooses to post low-quality content. They run out of good material at post four and publish something thin at post five because the calendar said to.
Two things genuinely raise the ceiling:
- A capture habit. Most founders have far more material than they think and no system for catching it. Customer calls, support tickets, arguments you had on Slack, decisions you reversed. The bottleneck is usually retrieval, not generation.
- A faster path from idea to draft. If turning a rough thought into a publishable post takes 90 minutes, five posts a week is a part-time job. If it takes 15, the same output is trivial. This is the honest case for AI drafting tools — not that they invent ideas, but that they collapse the distance between having one and shipping it.

Post three times. Record impressions, engagement rate, and one subjective score out of 10 for how good you thought each post was before publishing. That last number is the one everyone skips and it's the most important.

Same tracking. Watch your own quality scores, not just the metrics. If posts four and five scored 4/10 while your week-1 posts averaged 7/10, you've already found your ceiling and it's between three and five.

Only attempt this if week 2 held its quality. If you're reaching for topics by Wednesday, stop the test here. Reaching for topics is the signal, and it shows up in your own judgement before it shows up in your analytics.

Week 4 — drop back one notch and hold
Whatever cadence you last sustained at a quality score of 6 or above, subtract one post. That's your real number. The subtraction is deliberate: your test-week output was fuelled by novelty, and you need headroom for the weeks when work gets busy.

Now compare impressions per post across the four weeks. If per-post reach dropped as volume rose, you were diluting. If it held or rose, your ceiling is higher than you thought and you can retest upward next quarter.
Subjective quality scoring before you publish sounds unrigorous. It's the most predictive signal you have, because you already know which posts you're proud of and which ones exist to fill a slot.
Cadence by where you are
- Starting out, under 1,000 followers. 3 a week. Your constraint is finding your angle, and you need enough attempts to learn what your audience responds to without exhausting your material in a month.
- Established, 1,000 to 10,000 followers. 4 to 5 a week. You have signal about what works. This is the range where consistency pays fastest.
- Large audience, 10,000+. 3 to 5 a week, weighted toward higher-effort formats. At this size individual post quality matters more than volume, because your reach floor is already high.
- Company page. 3 to 5 a week, and expect lower engagement per post than a personal profile regardless of frequency.
Note what's missing: a tier that recommends daily posting. Not because the data forbids it, but because almost nobody sustains it solo, and an abandoned daily habit performs worse than a maintained thrice-weekly one.
Format matters more than frequency
If you only change one thing, change format rather than cadence. In the same Buffer dataset, measured against text-only posts:
- Images: 72% more engagement
- Video: 84% more engagement
- Carousels: 278% more than video, 303% more than images, and close to 600% more than text
The gap between a text post and a carousel dwarfs the gap between posting three times and five times a week. Three carousels beat seven text posts on almost every dimension, and take less total effort than seven of anything.

Three ways high frequency goes wrong
You start posting about posting. The most reliable sign someone has exceeded their material is content about content — engagement tips, LinkedIn meta-commentary, "here's what I learned from posting daily for 30 days." It's what's left when the real well runs dry.
Your hooks get generic. Volume pressure pushes people toward templates, and templates converge on the same five openers everyone else is using.
